Chef Interrupted: Discovering Life's Second Course in Ireland with Multiple SclerosisBy Trevis L. Gleason

When Trevis Gleason, a former chef at the top of his professional culinary career, was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, he lost everything—his job, his marriage, even his perceived persona. Surveying the ruins of his former life, he saw an opportunity to fulfill a long-postponed dream. He would travel from Seattle, Washington, to the wilds of west Kerry, Ireland for the winter. Renting a rustic cottage in “The Town,” Trevis braved narrow, sheep-obstructed roads and antiquated heating systems to learn that his life, his loves (including cooking), and even his dreams weren’t lost, just waiting to be rediscovered in this magical place. He acquired a charming puppy named Sadie, who grounded his days and served as a devoted companion as he surmounted inevitable physical setbacks and cultural challenges. All the while, he entertained a steady stream of visiting friends and relatives, including his former wife. The Town’s colorful characters welcomed the American stranger as one of their own, and he soon found himself reveling in the beauty of the rugged countryside, the authentic joy of the holidays, the conviviality of the pubs, and the hearty flavor of the simple food. Recipes included.

Review

"While many a reader will pick up Chef Interrupted expecting some kind of culinary history or memoir, in fact it's much more: it's about survival and living with MS, and about envisioning and forming a new life. Through Gleason's eyes, more than Ireland comes to life - and more than cooking becomes the focus, making for a recommendation to travel and self-help readers as well as audiences with an interest in culinary memoirs."

--Publisher's Weekly, April 2015

"Don't think of this book as a how-to-cope tome. Trevis Gleason's' Chef Interrupted is a wide entertainment and a joy to read. Certainly his prose abounds in Celtic wit and American audacity.

--Martha King, Editor, Momentum, the magazine of the National MS Society (USA)

"Chef Interrupted is, like all of Trevis' writings, instantly relatable, funny, smart, skeptical, hopeful, and always interesting."

--Rose Pike, Executive Editor, EverydayHealth.com.

"When I want to know what's really 'cooking' in the MS community, I log onto Trevis' blog. He has never failed to provide balanced, candid, thoughtful and even humorous insights into life with MS. His perspectives about the issues of the day - MS related and otherwise - always enlighten and inform me. The same is true for Chef Interrupted."

--Joyce Nelson, CEO emeritus, National Multiple Sclerosis Society

"Trevis is one of those truly gifted community organizers. To be able to lead and organize a community you have to be able to have the ability to inspire and Trevis has this down to an art. I've seen him transform his pain into humor, humility and personal growth via his writings but perhaps even more impressive is his natural ability to relate and reach people. That means he has the gift to make you give a damn to the point you find yourself repeating his musings to others. That's a mark of a talented writer and community leader."

Natalie Brown, Editor, Health Talk

This is a fascinating but hard read. The first half or so of the book has to do with the insight that a blind person develops. It is well spoken but the author needed to pare it down because it tends to drag the reader down. Several times I almost gave up, but it I wanted and hoped for more so I kept going. When he finally got to the work with the French resistance it was a very interesting story but I wanted him to tell me more about their actual activities. His insight into people and motives and truth in character now was a matter of life and death. Now I realized why he spent so much time in the first part of the book developing this train of thought. The descriptions of the inner lives of people in the prison camp was so well written and thought out. It made the whole reading worth the effort it took to get through it. Though I have read much about this period of history nothing looked at the inner life struggles in such a personal and intimate way. He was a master of deciphering the real soul of people around him. And, in the last half of the book he was very successful helping the reader to grasp a much deeper level of the horror or the holocaust.

I have read this book more than once, and each time gain new insights and leave feelings I am little better for it. It will change the way you understand "blindness" and especially how you understand humanity. The author saw and experienced the very worst of what Man can do, and yet didn't allow it to break his spirit. The opposite really; it made him want to bring light into darkness even more. A profound lesson for us all.

This memoir is unlike anything I ever read. Poetic, loving, joyous are not words one would ordinarily associate with the loss of one's sight, founding a youth resistance movement during the Nazi occupation of France, and more. More than any other book I've read about WW II, this one tells it like it was, yet retains a love of life and a deep humanity that can only pierce the heart. At least it pierced mine to the core.

This memoir is very unusual for at least these reasons:1. Jacques led a French resistance group during World War II.2. Jacques also survived his time at a Nazi concentration camp.He did both of the above as a blind person. The first part of the book is slower than the rest, as he tells of his youth and his happiness. He then writes of his student years. Once he gets into World War II, the story speeds up.What is so strange, and worth the read, is how Jacques found Light despite being blind. He discovered this Light early after becoming blind, and knew that he could trust it.An extraordinary memoir, read, and encounter with the Light..

If it were only an insight into the ways a blind person might think, this would have been worth it. Lusseyran was a compelling writer, observer, and with a sensitivity that I can only describe as totally blessed and God given. I don't imagine everyone has the experiences he shares--I've worked with blind people before, and never heard these kinds of observations. He himself would have said so.His participation as a very young man in the inception of the French resistance is amazing. That he could have been so young and so central to the development of this movement is totally mind-boggling. That he should have made it to Liberation is equally astounding.I liked the book, would have given it a 5 except that I got a little bogged down in some of his observations. But I'd recommend it to anyone.

Life is a lonely existence until reaches into ones own inner sanctum and begins to see the true light that illuminates everything and connects everyone. Lusseyran teaches us how light is a gift not only for those with visible eyes to see but for those with invisible eyes to see. His account of his finding joy in this light even after a childhood accident that left him blind brings comfort since many harbor some fear of going blind with age or disease. His account of courage in a beautiful marriage of dependence on others while maintaining a fiercely independent and loving personality gives us the courage to live our own lives with passion and self worth while remembering the worth of others. His account of enduring the trials of Nazi cruelty in a concentration camp bring resolve, hope and meaning to those enduring trials in life such as cancer, hunger and suffering that might otherwise seem unjustified except the knowledge that Lusseyran reminds us of: that there is always light and joy to be found inside us if we dispel the darkness of despair and choose to see love even more fully defined because of our trials.

This was inspiring. I have worked in pediatrics and this memoir demonstrated the resilience of a very young child when sight is ended. How Jacques adapted and use of his inner perceptions was unique. And then his leadership in the French resistance coupled with his resourcefulness when in captivity. I have recommended this book to others.

One of the best memoirs I've read - honest, soul-searching and full of courage. I especially liked the fact that he knew he was Loved from the beginning of his life, and that, even when he lost his sight, the LIGHT from God illuminated him all his life. A wonderfully, inspiring book.
